In fact, in history Ukraine has had powerful female leaders and even in old customs, women were given a choice in their suitors, unlike many Western women who were married off to whatever man their father chose, whether she liked it or not. In the wedding ceremony rituals, a groom would send a representative to the home of his would-be bride to ask her parents for their permission. If she wanted them to say yes, she would pretend to be cooking. If she did not, she would give the representative a pumpkin.
